Acworth, GA has a vibrant and historic downtown area that has retained its Victorian era charm and architecture. In 1862, the Great Locomotive Chase went through the town. That is when James Andrew’s raiders stole the famous engine “The General” in nearby Big Shanty. Sherman had his headquarters in Acworth for several days. The town was spared of fighting and damage until November 1864 when many homes and businesses were burned.
